SLEEP APNEA

Sleep apnea is a disease that causes reductions (hypopneas) or stops (apneas) in breathing during someone’s sleep. These situations that can last 10 to 60 seconds can reproduce hundreds of times a night. They are usually due to a blockage of the airflow in the upper airway.

Snoring and pauses in breathing are the main signs of sleep apnea, they are often detected by the spouse. Other symptoms may also be indicative such as drowsiness during the day, morning headaches, poorly controlled hypertension, recurrent and permanent fatigue, difficulty concentrating , irritability, drowsiness while driving or at work, libido disorders…

There are various tests performed by a qualified physician that can detect sleep apnea :

POLYGRAPH

This test can detect and record different signals: nasal flow, snoring, respiratory effort, oxygenation, heart rate.

POLYSOMNOGRAPH

This test can detect and record neurological signals (EEG , electrooculogram, electromyogram) as well as respiratory signals.

TREATMENT OF SLEEP APNEA

Depending on the tests results, the doctor will make a diagnosis and prescribe a treatment undergoing Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP). Recognized as a standard treatment, CPAP is designed to keep the upper airway open for blowing pressurized air through an interface (nasal mask, facial, oral and nasal tip).

2 modes can be used:

  • The constant mode (fixed pressure)
  • The autopilot mode with a variable pressure (low pressure and high pressure)

Settings are determined by the prescribing physician. Specialized in respiratory care at home, technicians of Oxygen Breeze will help you install the equipment in your home in accordance with your medical prescription .
